Conversations with the Critics of Faith - Weekly Topics
During the summer over the last three years, the pastors of First Presbyterian Church have led a combined Adult Sunday School Class in the Fellowship Hall from 9:15-9:45 immediately following Morning Prayer in the Chapel (9:00) and prior to Worship in the Sanctuary (10:00). Three years ago the topic was “Introduction to the Reformed Tradition” and two years ago two controversial papers at the heart of conflict in our denomination were examined -- The Trinity Paper and The Peace-Unity-Purity Report. Last summer a book by Stephen Puckett entitled This We Believe served as a text for examining basic Christian doctrines.
In keeping with this emerging Christian Education tradition, this summer we will once again focus on core doctrines and beliefs central to our Presbyterian heritage, yet from the perspective of engaging in “Conversations with the Critics of Faith.” This topic for our summer study has been prompted by recent reports in the news media highlighting the work of popular scholars who have raised serious questions concerning the veracity of many fundamental Christian claims. Alongside discussion of the overall “Authority of Scripture” and “The Truth of the Resurrection,” we will also consider current movies and works of fiction that have impacted the faith of many.
Handouts will be provided to all participants at each class and there is no prior preparation required (except for those classes which focus on a movie or novel).
The Education Committee has adopted this structure for summer Adult Sunday School for a variety of reasons, but most of all to build a sense of community and fellowship while also providing Sunday School teachers during the school year a well deserved time of rest and renewal.
Come and participate in Sunday School this summer at Belmont’s First Presbyterian Church!
