The Young - At - Hearts!
The Young at Hearts program at First Presbyterian Church-Belmont was started in the mid-1990’s. The program originally was begun to offer social and fellowship opportunities to Church members 65 years of age and older, often including their guests and friends.
The Young at Hearts program is under the guidance of the Church’s Congregational Life Committee. Beth Geddis, currently the congregational representative serving as the program’s coordinator, and Robin Russell, Church staff member and Director of Youth Ministries, plan events, activities and programs for this group.
Two mainstays on the calendar are the Young at Hearts’ annual trip to Flat Rock and the Christmas luncheon. Each summer the group travels by bus to Flat Rock, North Carolina, where they enjoy a specially planned lunch at an area inn or restaurant and see a performance at the Flat Rock Playhouse. And, each year at Christmastime, the group is treated to a holiday luncheon hosted in the homes of congregational members.
Other recent activities have included lunches and teas hosted by the Church’s youth, a pool party, a Valentine’s tea, day trips to Blowing Rock in the fall, cookouts, trips to Vespers in Davidson, a trolley ride through downtown Charlotte, Dutch-treat lunches and dinners, a tour of the new Billy Graham Ministry campus and facility, breakfasts and brunches, an afternoon coffee – and the list goes on.
A new spiritual program was just established in response to requests from this group. A midday prayer service will begin on Tuesday, August 29, 2006, and will be held weekly at 12:10pm in the Church’s Chapel. The service will end at 12:30pm, followed by a Dutch-treat lunch at a local restaurant. While this service was initiated to fill needs expressed by the Young at Hearts, it is open to all; and everyone is invited and welcome.
